Directors
Whilst my tenure as Chairman is relatively new, having succeeded Edwin Garrett in June 2007, I have been associated with the Company for more than 20 years as a leading reinsurer and since 2001 as a Director. During that time, I have been delighted to be part of the continued expansion of the Company and our recognised global expertise.
As Chairman of an insurer, acknowledged as a global leader in many of the classes of business we write, it has been a significant part of the Company's strategy and my responsibility that the Board of Directors fully appreciate and understand the needs of our Membership.
At board level, we continue to develop a cross section of Director’s skills, in support of the business, ensuring that we respond to the ever increasing governance needs of a modern and successful insurance company.
TF Hart - Chairman
Current Directors Biographies
Trevor F. Hart, Chairman
Mr Hart was appointed as a Non-Executive Director in 2001 and appointed Chairman in 2007. He is also a Director of certain subsidiary companies and is a member of all committees. He was previously a marine underwriter with a Lloyds' syndicate and is based in England.
Peter A. Bobeff, Vice Chairman
Mr Bobeff was appointed as a Non-Executive Director in 1985 and as Vice-Chairman in 2007. He is, in line with his position of Vice Chairman, a member of all committees. He was previously Senior Vice President, commercial affairs, of Fosters Brewing Group Limited, retiring in 2005 and is based in Australia.
Alison Alden
Mrs Alden commenced employment with Sunderland Marine Mutual Insurance Company Limited in 2004. She was appointed to the Board as an Executive Director in 2010. She is the Group Financial Controller of the Company and is based in England.
Alistair D.W. Allan
Mr Allan was appointed as a Non-Executive Director in 1986. He is also a Director of certain subsidiary companies, is a member of several of its committees, and is Chairman of the audit committee. He was previously Managing Director of Denholm Seafoods Limited, retiring from that position in 2004 and is based in Scotland.
Jeremy Alford
Mr Alford was appointed as a Non-Executive Director of the Company on 2nd February 2009 and has been a member of the Company's investment committee since 2007. His involvement with the Company began many years ago through his previous employment with Alliance Bernstein, London (of which he was Senior Vice President) and Whittingdale Holdings Ltd. He is based in England.
J. Peter Crichton
Mr Peter Crichton was appointed as a Non-Executive Director in 2008. He is a consultant with the North of England P&I Club Association, having been joint Managing Director in that company until his retirement in May 2006. He is based in England.
William J.J. Crowe
Mr Crowe was appointed as a Non-Executive Director in 2000 and sits on the audit committee. He is a self-employed consultant specialising in fish farming and European governance. He is based in Scotland.
Christopher J. Hilton
Mr Hilton was appointed as a Non-Executive Director in 2008. He is currently a partner in Eversheds LLP and based in England.
Peter M. Johnson
Mr Johnson was appointed as a Non-Executive Director in 2000 and is a member of the audit and investment committees. He is a self-employed chartered accountant, and was previously a senior partner of KPMG, Newcastle. He is based in England.
Andrew L. Marr
Mr Marr was appointed as a Non-Executive Director in 1981 and is Chairman of the investment committee. He is Chairman of Andrew Marr International Limited and is based in England.
Frederick J. Mattera
Mr Mattera was appointed as a Non-Executive Director in 1998. He is a commercial fisherman and President of the Point Club. He is actively involved in marine safety training as head of NESTCo and is based in the USA.
Geoffrey C. Parkinson
Mr Parkinson commenced employment with Sunderland Marine Mutual Insurance Company Limited in 1972. He was appointed to the Board as an Executive Director in 1993. He is also a Director of certain subsidiary companies and is either a member of or an attendee of all committees. He is the Chief Executive Officer of the Company and is based in England.
Tom Rutter
Mr Rutter commenced employment with Sunderland Marine Mutual Insurance Company Limited in 1979. He was appointed to the Board as an Executive Director in 2010. He is the Aquaculture Manager of the Company and is based in England.
Peter I. Talley
Mr Talley was appointed as a Non-Executive Director in 1990. He is the Managing Director of Talley's Fisheries Limited and is based in New Zealand.
Christopher H.D. Venn
Mr Venn was appointed as a Non-Executive Director in 1999. He is a director of Ovenstone Limited and is based in South Africa.
Angela Vipond
Miss Vipond commenced employment with Sunderland Marine Mutual Insurance Company Limited in 1990. She was appointed to the Board as an Executive Director in 2010. She is the Corporate Risk Manager of the Company and is based in England.
David M. Windmill
Mr Windmill was appointed as a Non-Executive Director in 1996 and is a member of the audit committee. He was previously the Managing Director of Marine Harvest Limited and is currently Chief Executive of The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland. He is also the Honorary Consul General for Norway in Edinburgh. He is based in Scotland.
Alan S. Rowland, Company Secretary
Mr Rowland was appointed Company Secretary of Sunderland Marine in 2002, having been Assistant Company Secretary of Salvus Bain (Mgt) Ltd since 1998.
Graham Darke, Assistant Company Secretary
Mr Darke was appointed Assistant Company Secretary on 2nd February 2009, having worked for the Management Company in the claims department since 1989.
